AquaAgri Kelp

AquaAgri Kelp develops methods for large scale cultivation of the kelp species Saccharina latissima on the Swedish west coast. Saccharina is a brown macro algae that grow naturally in our water. The project examines how the growth and harvesting of kelp can be optimized; among other things, we try to develop breeding lines that are specially adapted to the prevailing conditions with low salinity and high water temperature. The long-term sustainability of the cultivations is a significant issue. Therefore, we map environmental effects and analyze the socio-economic aspects of ecosystem services and how to prevent conflicts of interest.
